Throughout the year, the Grace Church Homeless Ministry provides food, clothing, and gifts to homeless people, with the active help and support of the Youth Ministry, Pennyworth, and students at Grace Episcopal Day School (GEDS). Once monthly, generally on the first Saturday, volunteers from the Homeless Ministry gather in church undercroft to make approximately 250 sandwiches and enough minestrone soup to feed a couple of hundred of our hungriest friends! The fellowship-loving group is often enlivened by young people and even small children as well as adults, and is lucky to have the active participation on some occasions of the Grace Youth group. In addition, thanks to help from volunteers at GEDS, students at the school often make 100 or more sandwiches during the week prior to our venturing downtown, and leave them for us in the church kitchen fridge. Moreover, each month Pennyworth volunteers are good enough to drop off several large bags of clothing they can spare–ranging from sweats and jeans to shoes and the occasional sleeping bag–for us to deliver downtown. A subset of volunteers drives the Grace van downtown Washington D.C. on that first Saturday to about 10 parks and delivers the food and clothing. Leftovers are delivered on the way back to church to Shepherd’s Table, a soup kitchen in Silver Spring.<\/p>\n
The biggest day of the year for the ministry is the first Saturday of the year in January. We collect gifts from the whole congregation during Advent, using ornaments hung on the “Angel Tree” which request donations of new items to give to our homeless friends, such as boots, sleeping bags, and numerous other frequently-requested items of clothing. We also deliver scores of shoe boxes from the “Shoebox Ministry” which are shoe boxes stuffed and individually wrapped by the Youth Group and Homeless Ministry volunteers, that include brand-new gloves, hats, scarves, undershirts, snacks and a few other items. A caravan of vehicles led by the blue Grace van that some might say resembles Santa’s Sleigh headed downtown and delivered the belated Christmas gifts on that big Saturday.<\/p>\n
